Empowering Jimadores and Jornaleros in San Pedro de Los Landeros

The Gente Buena Foundation (GBF) is proud to collaborate with the skilled jimadores (agave harvesters) and jornaleros (day laborers) of San Pedro de Los Landeros in a new workforce development program. We recognize the vital role they play in the community’s economic well-being, and this program is designed to elevate their existing expertise and open doors to new opportunities.

Building on a Strong Foundation:

This program acknowledges the immense value of traditional skills and knowledge within the jimador and jornalero communities. We work alongside experienced professionals to develop advanced harvesting techniques that maximize yield while ensuring the long-term health of the agave population.

  • Sustainable Harvesting Techniques: Workshops led by experienced jimadores explore best practices for sustainable agave harvesting, fostering knowledge exchange and ensuring these techniques are informed by local experience.
  • Safety and Ergonomics Workshops: These workshops focus on proper body mechanics to prevent injuries and ensure a long career. The importance of using personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, protective eyewear, sturdy boots, and appropriate clothing is emphasized.

Expanding Skill Sets:

The program offers optional modules to further enhance their expertise:

  • English Language Skills: Gain fluency in basic English to broaden communication possibilities and open doors to new employment opportunities.
  • Workplace Rights and Safety: Strengthen understanding of worker rights and essential safety protocols for various work environments, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Building a Brighter Future:

By investing in professional development, the Gente Buena Foundation invests in the future of San Pedro de Los Landeros. This program aims to:

  • Increase Earning Potential: Enhanced skills and certifications can lead to higher wages and improved standards of living.
  • Enhance Safety: Learning proper techniques, safety protocols, and the importance of using personal protective equipment minimizes workplace accidents and injuries.
  • Boost Local Economy: A skilled workforce fuels economic growth, benefiting businesses and the entire community.
  • Promote Sustainability: The program emphasizes responsible land management practices, ensuring the long-term health of the agave population and the environmental well-being of the community.
