Water security & safety

Many communities in Jalisco, Mexico, lack reliable access to clean water. The Gente Buena Foundation partners with the University of Gaudalajara and Pronatura, Mexico’s largest conservation nonprofit, to provide comprehensive water security solutions where they’re needed most.

Nature-Based Solutions for San Pedro de Los Landeros

In one such case, Pronatura and the Gente Buena Foundation developed a long-term strategy for water security and watershed health in the small tequila-producing town of San Pedro de Los Landeros (SPL). In addition to installing 5,000-liter cisterns to ensure  24/7 access to clean water for each household and every resident, the team developed a two-year plan to replenish SPL’s water source using nature-based solutions (green water retention systems, soil and water conservation, waterways restoration, reforestation) and build community capacity for ongoing sustainable management.

The water equity & access program in SPL paves the way for sustainable water management across agave-producing regions.

Benefits of this type of comprehensive program include:

  • Long-term water security: A healthy watershed ensures a reliable water supply for generations to come.
  • Improved health and hygiene: Access to clean water fosters a healthier community.
  • Environmental protection: Nature-based solutions restore the ecosystem and combat climate change.
