Women’s Resilience & Prosperity

Alas para el Futuro/Wings for the Future:

The Gente Buena Foundation is proud to introduce an innovative program aimed at enhancing the lives of women in San Pedro de los Landeros (SPL) through education, skill development, and economic opportunities. In collaboration with ProSociedad and UN Women, we’ve launched the “Second Chance” initiative, a comprehensive 38.5-hour workshop designed to equip local women with valuable skills in hospitality and culinary arts.

Our program addresses three key areas:

  • Re-entry into formal education
  • Vocational training for employment
  • Business skills development for entrepreneurship

The workshop kicked off on July 2nd with 18 enthusiastic participants, a significant proportion of women in SPL. Over the course of the program, these women are gaining insights into:

  • The role of women in the national economy
  • Employment inequalities and labor rights
  • Financial management and resource allocation
  • Personal competencies and skill assessment

As the program progresses, participants will engage in hands-on training in hospitality and cooking, preparing them for careers in the thriving tourism industry of Jalisco. Additionally, they’ll explore entrepreneurship strategies, opening doors to potential business opportunities in the tourism sector.

A unique feature of our program is the UN Women diploma, which will provide participants with recognized credentials to enhance their resumes and improve their employability.

Impact and Future Prospects:

  • 13 dedicated women are currently advancing through the program
  • Participants are gaining practical skills aligned with local economic needs
  • The initiative is fostering a sense of community and mutual support among women in SPL
  • Upon completion, graduates will be better positioned to secure employment or start their own ventures

The Gente Buena Foundation sees this program as a stepping stone towards broader community development. We’re committed to exploring further collaborations with ProSociedad and other partners to expand our reach and continue making a positive impact on the lives of SPL residents.

WATCH: WOMEN IN TEQUILA SERIES

Women have a long history of being the unseen forces behind cultural treasures, and the story of tequila is no exception. While men have traditionally received most of the credit for distilling and distributing this beloved spirit, women have played a crucial role in every step of tequila’s journey.

In Jalisco, Mexico, the heart of tequila production, it was women who were instrumental in cultivating and processing the agave plant. Women weren’t just nurturing the plants; they likely played a key role in developing the first fermented agave beverages, the precursors to modern tequila.

However, the narrative is shifting. Women are no longer content with remaining behind the scenes. A wave of female leadership is transforming the tequila industry and local communities. Today, you’ll find women as agave farmers, tequilera maestras (master distillers), community leaders, and even CEO.

This is why Gente Buena Foundation is honored to be a part of the Valor Women in Tequila Series- elevating the voices of women blazing trails towards a more equitable tequila industry!
