The Good Agave Pledge

Cultivating a Thriving Future for the People and Land of Jalisco, Mexico

The Good Agave Pledge works to make sure that the people and land of Mexico benefit from the global success of the agave spirits industry. We work hand-in-hand with local people and partners to support their well-being, protect their environment, and build vibrant communities together.

Founded in 2024, our first year of commitments launched meaningful, lasting change in San Pedro de los Landeros, a region central to agave production and our mission to balance social and environmental care.

Our Founding Members

With collaboration from Pronatura, the University of Guadalajara, and the College of Michoacán, our flagship impacts included:

Community Resilience and Women’s Leadership

  • Local Emergency Response: Training sessions in first aid, CPR, and search-and-rescue techniques empowered residents to bridge gaps in emergency medical services. These lifesaving skills are enhancing community resilience.
  • Strengthening Health and Safety: Based on a health assessment, we launched programs equipping residents with tools and resources to safeguard their health and well-being.
  • Empowering Women with “Second Chance” Training: Partnering with CUvalles, UN Women, and ProSociedad, the Second Chance program supported 10 women in vulnerable situations. Participants gained job training, entrepreneurial skills, and re-entered formal education. In November 2024, their achievements were celebrated at a certification ceremony attended by community leaders and academic collaborators.

Sustainable Production and Environmental Stewardship

  • Advancing Sustainable Agave Practices: We facilitated the First Exchange of Sustainable Agave Practices in San Pedro de los Landeros with CUvalles and the University of Guadalajara. Over 30 agronomists and agave producers shared knowledge about agroecology, reducing environmental impact, preserving biodiversity, and enhancing soil health.
  • Reforesting San Pedro de los Landeros: During the rainy season, more than 50 community members planted 150 trees with support from Tequila Atanasio, CUvalles, and Colegio de Michoacán. Agave Conquista contributed another 50 trees, ensuring every resident now has a tree to nurture. This reforestation strengthens biodiversity, combats soil erosion, and contributes to carbon sequestration.

Water Security and Safety

  • Transforming Water Access: In Jalisco’s agave-producing regions, water scarcity is a critical issue. In San Pedro de los Landeros, 51 families faced unpredictable water access. In partnership with Pronatura, we launched a comprehensive program to provide clean, reliable water for all 176 residents. Efforts include installing 5,000-liter water cisterns for every household, building a new water pipeline, and implementing nature-based solutions like watershed restoration and green water retention systems. This two-year initiative improves health, reduces water scarcity, and creates a replicable model for other regions.
  • Combating Mosquito-Borne Diseases: Workshops educated residents on eliminating breeding grounds, using repellents, and improving access to medications and prevention tools. Long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets were distributed to safeguard health.
