Women’s leadership
The Gente Buena Foundation is committed to building women’s leadership across San Pedro de los Landeros (SPL) and the wider agave region. We invest in programs that expand women’s economic opportunity, preserve local culture and knowledge, and strengthen the leadership roles women hold in their communities. These efforts take several forms, from professional education and vocational training to initiatives that celebrate and build on the cultural knowledge women carry.
Alas para el Futuro/Wings for the Future:
One pillar of this work is professional education and practical skill development aligned with local economic needs. In collaboration with ProSociedad and UN Women, GBF launched a comprehensive series of workshops in SPL that was designed to equip participating women with valuable skills and hands-on training in hospitality, tourism, and entrepreneurship.
The program addressed three key areas:
- Re-entry into formal education
- Vocational training for employment
- Business skills development for entrepreneurship
Participants gained insights into:
- The role of women in the national economy
- Employment inequalities and labor rights
- Financial management and resource allocation
- Personal competencies and skill assessment
The Gente Buena Foundation sees this program as a stepping stone toward broader community development. We’re committed to exploring further collaborations with ProSociedad and other partners to expand our reach and continue building women’s leadership and workforce development.
Cocina Ancestral y Tradicional (Community Kitchen)
Women also lead the way in preserving the community’s culinary heritage. The Foundation supports community-based workshops focused on celebrating the ancestral and traditional culinary knowledge of San Pedro de los Landeros. These gatherings create opportunities for intergenerational learning, cultural preservation, and knowledge sharing, while strengthening local identity and leadership. Participants exchange traditional recipes, cooking techniques, and food customs that reflect the history, values, and heritage of the community.
As of 2026, the initiative reached an important milestone with the completion of its community recipe testing phase. Collaborators from the University of Guadalajara and community participants are now working toward a community cookbook that documents local culinary traditions and stories. Beyond the publication itself, the process has given residents a chance to gather, share experiences, strengthen relationships, and preserve cultural knowledge for future generations.
The Foundation sees this work as a replicable economic development opportunity. By documenting and celebrating local culinary traditions, community members may be able to create future cultural, culinary, and hospitality experiences that generate local income while preserving cultural identity.
